World Championship Cheese Contest 2016!

Earlier in March, we had the honor of participating in the World Championship Cheese Contest, held in Madison, WI.  Forty-eight judges from 16 different countries analyzed the nearly 3000 entries, a record high. With so many entries, it amazes me how they did it all!  The contest’s big winner was Emmi Roth with their Roth Grand Cru Surchoix—making them the first Wisconsin Cheesemaker to win the contest since 1988! Congratulations—what an amazing achievement!

Of course, here at Maple Leaf we didn’t do too shabby either.

We took home 3rd Place for our English Hollow, Aged 6months-1 year; and we took home 2nd Place for the English Hollow, Aged 1-2years.

We also took home 2nd Place for Monterey Jack with Pepper, aka Jalapeno Monterey Jack.

When your passion and hard work get recognized amongst your peers….what a feeling! After hearing the results we, as a team, felt unbelievably proud. We are a family and EVERYONE has a hand in making our product what it is.  No role is too small.  We are graced with amazing employees, who really are a family unit—the care and dedication that comes from everyone is amazing; the maintenance personnel, the office staff, the cheesemakers, sanitation, the packaging team, the box maker….the list could go on! Every person involved is critical in the making of  great quality cheese.

As I’ve mentioned in previous blogs, the cheesemonger world is so united.  It’s at these events that this statement really shines through.  Yes, this was a competition–but it is almost like a family reunion.  The competitive feel is not high–everyone is so supportive of the amount of work that has gone into each and every sample there.  The industry itself is always there with a helping hand; whether it is helping with a problem, giving advice, new strategies…you name it, you will find help in some way! It’s incredible to witness, it really is.

We look forward to the rest of the contest and show season, as we are just beginning! We love meeting other cheesemakers, as well as those who just love our cheese!

Until next time,

Peace, love, and grilled cheese!
